Al Jarreau
Breakin’ Away
Warner, 1981
Al Jarreau (1940-2017) was one of the most famous American jazz singers. His father was a pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and his mother the church pianist.
The musicians Jarreau has worked with throughout his life are all stars, including Joe Sample, Chick Corea, Miles Davis, George Duke, David Sanborn, George Benson and Natalie Cole.
On February 12, 2017, Jarreau died of respiratory failure at the age of 76, just two days after announcing his retirement.
His album Breakin ‘Away, released in 1981, remained on the Billboard 200 for over two years and is considered a model of LA jazz and R&B. This album earned him the Grammy Award in 1982 for Best Male Singer.
Jarreau’s technical level on the record is very high, and “Closer To Your Love” and “Teach Me Tonight” are among the most representative tracks, with heartfelt moving interpretations.
