Afrika Love is the third album by the eclectic collective Alchemy Sound Project.
The ensemble consists of Sumi Tonooka on piano, Salim Washington on tenor, flute and oboe, Erica Lindsay on soprano and tenor, Samantha Boshnack on trumpet and David Arend on double bass. The new album collects an original composition written by each of the musicians. Michael Ventoso on trombone and Chad Taylor on drums complete the lineup on this occasion.
The opening piece “The Fountain” is emblematic: the double bass and piano riff supported by the pressing groove of the drums, the winds expose the angular and aggressive theme, often characterized by dissonant harmonizations and asymmetrical rhythmic figures, creating further tension.
“Dark Blue Residue” develops over a more moderate tempo, but the underlying tension that characterizes the work of the Alchemy Sound Project remains, in this case softened by the flute played by Washington.
The title track begins in the form of a very slow march and then flows into a brilliant sunny and positive jazz waltz, with a remarkable piano solo. “The Cadillac of Mountains” and the final “Kasii” are characterized by the numerous changes in rhythm with different sections for the nature and number of instruments involved.
Afrika Love is a very articulate, well written and arranged album that brilliantly and elegantly mixes jazz and world music.
