The search for sound

We have interviewed the bassist and author Aldo Mella who, together with the singer Luisa Cottifogli and the drummer Massimo Serra has formed Youlook Trio.

How would you define the Youlook Trio project?
If I may say so, I would define it as a project having an original sound. I have always thought that, in a group, the most important thing is searching for sound. Once you’ve found it, everything you play will have an original character and Youlook first album, Desert Island is a proof of it, and with the second work, Chapter II, I think it’s the confirmation.
 
How did compositions and arrangements in Chapter II come?
Actually, many of the original compositions were suitably tailored for the trio, by starting from their sound potential. But, as I previously said, once we have found the sound, everything you face becomes original, with the Youlook sound!
 
 
The trio sound is distinctive, modern and, at the same time, tied to an old world. What are your main artistic references?
Let’s start from the fact that Luisa, Massimo and I aren’t that young anymore! I would say that a lot of our work is a consequence of the influences that each one of us has obviously had over the years in very different fields. I couldn’t have, or recognize, just one particular reference. I think that, instead, Youlook sound has been affected by all our experiences.

The style of the compositions has very different cultural and musical references: was it a natural creative process?
Personally, I never had any genre limits as far as listening and performance are concerned, and I was very lucky, as I was always able to have a lot of different experiences, even if my guiding line was always jazz. With Youlook we always aimed at the result we could get as a whole. For this reason, our repertoire draws from many different musical styles, and many guests participated in this last work, by adding a further magical touch.
 
What is the common denominator among the tracks you chose for the album?
When we start working on a new composition, or on a non-original track, first of all we try to find the right sound for each instrument. Despite the reduced line-up, we have a lot of resources available, opening endless possibilities. As a consequence of that, I think that the guiding line is in fact in each track sonority, which is however starting from the same root.
 
What projects are there in the future of Youlook trio?
We have many projects, but I don’t want to be verbose if I say that nowadays, it is very difficult to go on with a project of this kind, even if it could sound strange. I have the feeling that, without an economic support, it is more and more difficult to promote your own music, and I am saying it with a little sorrow, especially in Italy. For sure, I would like to record a third album with Youlook, if not for confirming the old saying “Good things come in threes!”
