It was my big Christmas gift to interview Andrea Motis, who came with her Quartet to perform at Blue Note Tokyo during Christmas time. Thank you to Mr. Yasumasa Okada and Blue Note Tokyo for the interview.

How did you choose the songs for your album?

Oh, what an interesting question! I listen to a lot of jazz music; when I fall in love with a song, I will tell my band and we will learn the song together and play it in our way. We even work on non-jazz songs, like “Valerie” by Amy Winehouse. I also started to compose, so we play my compositions and friends’ compositions too. In short, we only play songs that we like.

How was it to work with Gil Goldstein?
This collaboration was proposed by Universal. We both agreed to this cool idea, so I fled to States, and he was very kind.

Do you think that being Spanish affects the way you play?
Some people comment on YouTube that they feel exotic when I sing in English; I just want to make my music as exciting as I can, no matter if it’s in English, Spanish or Portuguese.

How did you get inspired by Jazz when you were a kid?
I started to play music in school when I was 7. And when I was 10, I met my mentor, Joan Chamorro. He introduced me to jazz music, starting from New Orleans Jazz, Dixieland, etc.

Do you still remember the first album/ jazz tune that made you fall in love with jazz?
es, I remember I loved listening to Bobby Hackett, I fell in love with his song “New Orleans. I loved it so much that I tried to play like him. And I listen to Clifford Brown, he’s my favorite trumpeter.

What about jazz singers?
I didn’t listen much to singers’ albums at the beginning, then later I listened to Billy Holiday. I especially love “All of me” by her and Lester Young.

Recently you have you been busy in making the movie The Quiet Trumpet.
The quiet Trumpet is the movie title proposed by director Ramon Tort. He has been filming me and my band for three years. He came with us to Tokyo three years ago, and followed us to the States for the recording, and also came with us to the Chopin Music Festival in Poland. He will come to Chile next month, where I am going to teach in a workshop.
This movie is more like a poetic movie rather than a documentary. There will be a lot of music and inspiring footage, an artistic expression of my music and personal life.  I like Ramon a lot since he made Kids and Music, a story about Sant Andreu Jazz Band. it was a great film that won so many awards. When he proposed us to make a movie about me, I loved the idea straight away.  The Quiet Trumpet will be launched in Autumn 2018.

What are your next projects?
I have done 2 big projects this year so I am cooling down now. One project was  Brasil al Festival De Jazz de Barcelona in December. We played some traditional Brazilian songs and some Brazilian originals. Another project was “Nit d’Estiu I Festa Catalunya” in Catalonia. It means “summer party night” in English.  It was a mix of jazz, contemporary dance performances by Martina and Julia Miró (with the choreography of their father, the prestigious Mallorcan dancer Carles Miró); and funk and soul music.
