Antonello Losacco With Strings
Respira
GleAM, 2022
Respira is Antonello Losacco’s latest album, released in May by GleAM Records.
Antonello Losacco is an interesting double bass player and composer from Apulia (Italy), and he describes himself on his personal website as follows: “the challenge that I set myself now is to get closer and closer to the world of visual suggestion, to deepen the intimate links between sound, image and composition”.
And indeed, his new album Respira, released in May by GleAM, collects ten songs with a cinematic flavor, a kind of soundtrack without images, left to the pleasure and imagination of the listener. The album is particularly rich in terms of sounds: together with Losacco, the music stars a string quartet featuring Luisiana Lorusso and Giulia Gentile on violin, Rosanna Dell’Olio on viola and Giovanni Astorino on cello. The line up is completed by Francesco Schepisi on piano and by the special guest Giuseppe Bassi on double bass in “La Terra E Gli Uomini” and “Dove Sei”.
In Respira, Losacco explores the innumerable possibilities of an acoustic ensemble, embellished by the excellent writing and arrangement skills of the leader. The sinuous lines of “Almaluna”, the modal landscapes of “Alberto’s Thing”, the rhythmic approach of “The Journey”, the classical pizzicato of “Ricordi?”… the listener is taken by a whirlwind of ideas and inventions that brilliantly mix written music and improvisation.
Particularly interesting are “I Tuoi Occhi”, which contrasts a light melody with the obsessive comp of the double bass, and the short (but intense!) “Way Home, The Return”, certainly the most interesting arrangement of the record.
Respira is a light album full of content, which is appreciated in particular for the beautiful mix of sounds (classical and jazz) and different approaches (improvisation and writing).
