Barry Deister Quintet
Crows-The Portland Images Project
Self Release, 2021
April 21, 2021
Crows – The Portland Images Project is the latest album by the Barry Deister’s quintet.
A brilliant saxophonist from Chicago, Barry Deister moved to Portland in 1985 and found his home in this beautiful Oregon city. More than thirty years later, Deister decided to make a musical tribute to the city with his quintet, completed by Paul Mazzio on trumpet and flugelhorn, Randy Porter on piano, Jon Lakey on double bass and Tim Rap on drums.
The album, released on February 1st, collects seven original songs by Deister who is also a brilliant author. The sound is reminiscent of contemporary jazz of the 60s and is similar to those developed by famous personalities such as Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, etc. This can be seen in “Winter Wind”, a fascinating jazz waltz, and the subsequent “The Falls”, a lyrical and particularly suggestive ballad.
“Cascade Sunrise” is a sunny and open medium number, while the title track is inspired by a corrosive hard bop, full of breaks that support an angular and aggressive melody. “Yellow Flower” is a delicate bossa nova that features the leader on the flute, while “Fog” describes well the feeling of disorientation typical of fog, with the sax and the trumpet well arranged in counterpoint. The last track of the album is “Burnside Blues”, a blues piece inspired by a hard bop mood.
Crows is an interesting album, with well-written, well-arranged songs and played by a particularly cohesive and personal group: after listening to it you immediately want to book a trip to Portland!
