All You Lead is Love

We have interviewed Bear Trip, the crossover trio who has recently debuted with the homonymous album.

> Ivano Rossato

How was the project Bear Trip born?

The project was born in a very natural way, we have often played together in several line-ups and as time passed our musical and human affinities resulted into a repertoire which represents us. The idea of recording an album arises from the wish to capture a mutual work. We are tied by a human relationship, more than musical, and this is our strength.

Which creative process do you follow in writing and recording tracks?
There isn’t a real process carrying to the realisation of a new track. Sometimes we start from a well structured idea which reaches its final form in a spontaneous way, some others we start from a little cell (which can be a sound, a riff, a theme) who, through the inputs of each one of us can evolve up to its final form (though it’s never final, actually…).

Does the sound in the album grows from an idea you’re aware of or is it the natural and unconscious melting of your individual style?
Let’s say that, by starting to compose together our music, we have begun a search path, in both timbre and composition, where our ideas were following a common flow. During the creative process, the choice of the instruments and of the sound mixture arsing from it, was fundamental. As our project is very close to electronics, the combinations are nearly infinite and they strongly affect the different moments in the album or during the concerts, where each trio member’s personality can take the track towards unexplored territories.

By what musicians do you think you have been affected the most, from an artistic point of view?
We have been compared to many genres by our listeners: progressive, jazz, rock, industrial, fusion. For sure, our mutual passions are jazz, rock, electronics, more specifically artists like Now vs Now, Mehliana, Heernt, Donny McCaslin, Coltrane, Squarepusher, Aphex Twin.

Internet and streaming, from the artist point of view… Is it an opportunity or a slavery?
Both things. For sure, having the possibility of being distributed on all online platforms allows artists to reach a very large audience. From the other side, author’s protection and record market (intended as record physical distribution and possible economic return for the artists) are strongly affected by this.

How do you think that the Bear Trip project will evolve?
Bear Trip is in continuous mutation, even the tracks in the album do not stop to evolve, together with the new ones. We are slowly defining a new way, that perhaps will take us to record a new album, maybe with a collaboration, who knows!
