Blue Has A Range is the latest album by Steve Cardenas.
The American guitarist, particularly known for having played with – among others – Charlie Haden, Steve Swallow, John Patitucci, Paul Motian, Joey Baron and Adam Nussbaum, presents a new album of original songs with Blue Has A Range, released by Sunnyside on July 10th.
Cardenas is accompanied by John Cowherd on piano, Ben Allison on double bass and Brian Blade on drums, musicians with whom he has collaborated in various ways over time. The record is well constructed and features aggressive tunes (“Blue Language”, “Signpost Up Ahead”), dreamy and delicate songs (“Language of Love”, “Siquijor”, “Blue Has A Range”), tracks with a contemporary sound (“Highline”, “Reflector”, “Lost and Found”) and acoustic numbers (“Fern’s Guitar”).
“Blue Has A Range” is a particularly well-produced album that highlights Cardenas’ many musical facets. A very well written and played record that is a small pearl of contemporary jazz.
