We have interviewed Carlos Sargent during the recent Dee Dee Bridgewater’s tour in Italy.

Why did you choose to become a musician? Why did you choose to play drums?
I don’t feel that I chose to become a musician or a drummer. I do feel that music and drums chose me.
How has the life of a musician changed since you started to play?
Well, I can only speak for myself in saying that, as I’ve grown as a musician, my life has evolved on many different levels. I’ve been given greater responsibilities as a musician, exposed to different genres of music, I also have had the opportunity to tour countries and play for artists that I only dreamed of.
Internet and the music: a gift or a curse?
I think the internet is both a gift and a curse. It has given the world access to all sorts of music, music lessons, etc. I also feel it’s sometimes used as a vessel to leak music without permission which isn’t beneficial for the artists.
What would you suggest to a youngster wishing to be a pro?
My advice to young people who wish to become professional musicians would be to study and learn as much as they can about their craft/instrument.  I would also suggest that they listen to all forms of music; there is something to learn from all genres.
What does it mean to comp a singer? Which are the difficulties?
To comp a singer to me means to enhance, inspire, motivate and uplift the artist. It is a musician’s job to create an atmosphere that allows the singer to feel creative, inspired and safe enough to do/go anyplace musically that they choose to without worry or fear.
Is there a special moment in your work with Dee Dee that you would like to share with us?
Between the years 2010-2012 I was fortunate to play at the Umbria Jazz festival in Umbria, Italy, with a house band from Memphis Tennessee. On my last visit there I was fortunate enough to see Prince perform there. During that show I told myself that I wanted to play on that same main stage one day.  As of the summer of 2017 I was a part of the headlining act for that exact same festival with Dee Dee and it was quite memorable for me.
Which are your next projects?
In between touring with Dee Dee Bridgewater; I’m in the studio working on several different records with different artists ranging from Hip Hop to Pop.
