The Quartet of Charlie Parker
Now’s The Time
Verve, 1957
Charlie Parker (nicknamed “Bird”), was born on August 29, 1920 in Kansas City, USA. He was the greatest alto sax player in jazz history and a very personal musician.
He dropped out of school at the age of fourteen to study music and was one of the leading exponents of the bebop genre.
His life was full of legends and dramas. Bird shocked the music world with the song “Cherokee”: his extraordinary speed, rhythm and phrasing established his status as one of the best performers ever lived.
The musicians who worked with him were all stars on their own right, including Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. Unfortunately Parker was addicted to drugs and alcohol and died at age 35.
