Jazzespresso has interviewed an extraordinary portraitist, the German photographer Claudia Hunter, who is currently working on her project “Faces of Jazz”.

Who’s Claudia Hunter?
I am a German Jazz and Photography lover from Cologne. Recently last year I finally combined both loves in a project called “Faces of Jazz“.
Why did you choose jazz photography? Are you only interested in jazz?
I am a Jazz addict for almost 20 years now and I was always interested in the question: Who are the personalities behind the music? Gladly I got to know so many musicians in person over the years. But it’s not only Jazz as it has a wide range and the transitions are very smooth…
Would you like to share with us an anecdote about your relationships with jazz musicians?
There was a crazy situation. It happened after their fantastic concert at the famous opera house Liceu in Barcelona. The musicians and I ended up in a small Jazz club with live music and we had a lot of fun. In between the live sets some dance music came from the speakers. And so I danced with musicians on a club mix of a famous jazz tune. – But not just any musicians and any jazz tune. It was the Gregory Porter Band and we danced on a club mix of their famous tune „Liquid Spirit“. Never did that before – dancing on a club mix together with the musicians of the original version.
What could you suggest to young photographers approaching this art?
Take your camera as often as you can and practice. Do your own mistakes and you will learn a lot.

Which is your favourite gear?
I am addicted to Leica and I love to use the Leica Q and the Leica SL.

Is there a pic you’d wish you’ve taken?
Not a specific one. But I wish I had started with my project “Faces of Jazz” much earlier in general.
