Conrad Herwig
The Latin side of Horace Silver
Savant, 2020

October 30, 2020

In the eighth record of the series “The Latin Side of …” Conrad Herwig pays homage to Horace Silver.

It was 1996 when the trombonist Conrad Hewig released “The Latin Side Of John Coltrane 2”, the first of seven albums released in the following 25 years aimed at revisiting, in a Latin-Cuban key, the repertoires of some great composers in the history of jazz (including Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock).

Savant has just released the eighth album of the series dedicated to Horace SIlver. The record reinterprets some of the most famous pages of the American pianist (real super classics of contemporary jazz such as “Nica’s Dream”, “Song For My Father” , “Peace” and “Filthy McNasty”) in the classic Cuban style. It is very rhythmic and percussive. Michel Camilo, special guest in three songs, is a presence which further enriches the collection (a very enjoyable approach à la McCoy Tyner in “Song For My Father”).

The band features Igor Butman on tenor, Craig Handy on alto, Alex Spiagin on trumpet, Ruben Rodriguez on bass, Richie Flores on conga, and Robby Ameen on drums; Bill o’Connell sits at the piano in the songs where Camilo does not play.

The album, recorded live, skilfully manages to unite two worlds (the Cuban sound and Horace Silver). They are not too distant from each other and have arrangements full of inventions and are a superlative band from a technical and solo point of view. A festive, fresh and fun album.
