History Gets Ahead of the Story
Grizzley, 2020

July 29, 2020

The album by Jeff Cosgrove, John Medeski and Jeff Lederer is a tribute to William Parker.

William Parker is a brilliant New York double bass player (and multi-instrumentalist), particularly active and influential in the experimental scene of his city; he has played with many great names in American free jazz (from Cecil Taylor to David S. Ware) and is also a composer, poet and writer.

Of particular interest in the tribute that Jeff Lederer (sax), John Medeski (Hammond) and Jeff Cosgrove (drums) created with the sax organ trio formation is that their line up does not include the double bass, the instrument that Parker plays. Also, History Gets Ahead is Cosgrove’s sixth album as leader and, generally, he has almost always favored a repertoire based on instant compositions. The reinterpretation of some of the most interesting pages of an author (in this case Parker, with which he recorded Alternating Current of 2014 and Near Disaster of 2019) is therefore a novelty in his catalog.

The record is a beautiful journey in Parker’s music and in the history of jazz tout court: tight swing moments (“Moon”, with beautiful bop lines by Lederer) that alternate with free sections (” Things Fall Apart “). Delicate lines (the flute of” Little Bird “, ” Ghost “) are interspersed with the grooves of Medeski (” O’neal’s Porch “) and so on, making the disc always unpredictable and – despite the limited line up – rich in timbre inventions.
