William James “Count” Basie (1904-1984) was an American jazz pianist born in New Jersey; he studied piano with his mother and started playing in his hometown at a young age. In 1935 he founded his own jazz group, the Count Basie Orchestra, that led for almost 50 years. He introduced many innovations in jazz music, and the famous saxophone player Lester Young was once a member of his orchestra.
The Count Basie Orchestra’s classic album April In Paris, released by Verve Records in 1957 and produced by Norman Granz, is the evidence of his achievements in modern jazz, at the same time while preserving the tradition of jazz, and is Basie’s most successful album: enjoy its high value.
