Live at the Workers
On the occasion of the release of his new live album, we had the pleasure of meeting the trombonist, singer and bandleader Dan Barnett.

On “Strictly Swingin’ – Live at the Workers”, what impresses you the most and what are you most satisfied with?
I just love the fact that we captured the vibe of what the Workers bar gig is all ab out. The band played superbly, and you can tell by the audience reaction how great a day it was and how fantastic the Workers bar gig has been for us for over 12 years. We’ve always had a great and enthusiastic crowd whether they are dancers or listeners.
I just love the fact that we captured the vibe of what the Workers bar gig is all about.
Why did you choose that concert to make into an album? Did you already plan to publish it?
I just wanted to do a live recording at the Workers in the Unity Hall Hotel. It’s an iconic place that has had a continuous Jazz policy for over 47 years and that was the date the engineer was available. To be honest, we could’ve recorded any of the gigs there and they would’ve all been great. Each would be slightly different, but still great. Different people bring different flavors to the band so each month it’s fresh and vibrant.
What message does old school swing bring in 2019?
I think it’s a loud and strong message for us, the musicians. We delve back to the old school swing we first fell in love with and realized it matters to play it and that the music can still sound fresh. We can interpret it in our own way. I think the fact that people still ask for it shows how great the music is for it to survive this long.
How does your approach change in the arrangement and execution of original pieces compared to the classics of past masters?
I think that when we play out new or original material, we pay homage to the older music. We take what we have learned playing the older music and bring them into our own. It’s hard not to when then artists who defined the big band sound were so strong!
