Daniela Spalletta‘s new album is an eclectic concept titled Per Aspera ad Astra.
The Sicilian singer, composer and arranger worked for three years on the compositions of the project that seamlessly mixes jazz, world music, rock, fusion, pop, contemporary jazz, classical and Mediterranean music.
The vocalist is accompanied by the trio Urban Fabula with Seby Burgio on piano, Alberto Fidone on double bass and Peppe Tringali on drums; and with Jani Moder on guitar. The presence of a string orchestra, arranged by Spalletta and conducted by Fidone enriches the textures of the album.
The singer describes the record as “the story of a path of spiritual evolution, a lucid dream that passes through different stages. This evolution is expressed with a metamorphosis and the renunciation of attachment to what is no longer there or no longer needed: leaving space for the new that advances life flows and flourishes. The title, which has its origins in the classical world and in myth, is linked to the concepts of journey and ascension and has a rich mystical symbolism, with elements that recur in the musical and extra-musical contents of the album “.
The record is an extraordinary metaphorical and musical journey: different styles follow one another and coexist demonstrating the brilliant writing and arranging skills of Spalletta, as well demonstrated by “Samsara”, which superimposes the string orchestra on a contemporary rhythm, and then resulting in an almost chamber-like interlude of piano. Particularly interesting is the single “The Gift”, an intense ballad while “Power Flow-er” is a journey into the sounds of modern jazz.
Per Aspera ad Astra is a record very rich in contents, the synthesis of the whole musical experience of the twentieth century here developed with a personal and fascinating touch.
