Discovering Italy’s jazz indie labels.

Emme Produzioni Musicali is one of the more dynamic companies of the Italian background. Beyond being a record label it is also a recording studio, a school, a jazz music festival and many other things. We have interviewed the founder, Enrico Moccia.

How was EMME Produzioni musicali established?
Since when I started to work in jazz, in the middle of the last decade, many artists wished to cooperate with us as far as booking and management were concerned. What was an occasional activity was formalized in 2010 as Emme Produzioni Musicali, intended as studio, management and booking agency and event organization. In 2012, on the request of some artists, we started as a label, and at the beginning we exclusively realized records which were completely recorded, mixed and burnt in our studio; further on, we opened to projects we liked for the way they sounded, but recorded elsewhere. The catalogue, nowadays, is made of 40 titles, we are digitally distributed in 240 countries, we are presently working on the physical distribution, particularly in Japan.

One of your keywords is aggregation. What do you mean by this?
In a historical moment such as the present, the old concept of label has lost sheen; what an artist needs is a multitasking structure which is able to completely cover what is the musical production. To aggregate also means to be completely available to the artist during the artistic phase, but also for the distribution, the promotion activities and for the concerts organization, and that’s what we offer.

Is there a record you would have liked to produce?
There are a lot… Miles Davis, John Coltrane, I grew up with electric jazz, and therefore Chick Corea, John Scofield, the Yellowjackets come to my mind. There are really a lot!

Which is your target for the future?
What I would like to offer are more opportunities for the artists who are a part of our label. I’m especially talking about live concerts. To enlarge the network we are establishing, with several festivals and European realities, with exchange of artists and projects.

Could you disclose some information about the Fara Music Festival?
The 12th edition will be held from July 20 to 29, 2018, there will be ten concerts where we will host international and Italian artists aged under 35 years.
