Fabio De Angelis
Third Wave
GleAm, 2022
Fabio De Angelis’ debut album as a leader is an interesting mix of original songs and famous jazz standards played by a superb group.
Fabio De Angelis is an up and coming young drummer with great experience. GleAm Records released his debut as a leader, entitled Third Wave, on January 28th. Helped by Roberto Bonisolo on tenor sax, Luca De Toni on guitar and Ares Tavolazzi on double bass,
De Angelis recorded a set of original tunes as well as several jazz classics, including well-known standards such as “Boplicity” and “Beatrice”. The record features a relaxed mood which also embellishes fast tracks: emblematic is the opening “Tribulação”, a medium song with a Latin flavor, almost “laidback” in its (apparent) inclination towards laziness.
Third Wave has nice sound colours, guided by those of Luca De Toni’s guitar, a very interesting musician who avoids the most banal solutions and enriches the songs with modern and original playing (“Lake Zurich” and the theme of “Beatrice”).
The songs with the brushes are really intense (the leader’s initial dialogue with Tavolazzi in “Beatrice” for example), but the tunes that stand out most are “Diamond Boy”, with a delightful contemporary sound, and Gino Paoli’s “Senza Fine” , which is transformed into an ethereal composition with modal atmospheres.
The collection closes with the paroxysmal “Just In Time”, a virtuosic divertissement that is as fast as it is fun to listen to. Third Wave is a balanced, well played album that elegantly mixes different stylistic elements in an organic and pleasant track-list. We’ll be awaiting the sequel with curiosity.
