Summer Jazz Bossa Nova

On July 23, Summer Jazz Bossa Nova with Fabio Giachino & Gianni Virone will play at Tokyo’s Dot & Blue. We have met Giachino.

Is it this your first time in Asia?
This is my first time in Japan but the second in Asia, I was in Nepal in 2017 for some concerts.
What do you think of Asian jazz?
Unfortunately, I don’t know a lot about local jazz artists, only something about some incredible pianists. I am really curious to discover and to listen to their approach to the music!
What will you play at the show?
The repertoire is based on some original compositions by me and Gianni Virone (sax). We readapted some old tunes that we used to play with other bands, but we also wrote new material specifically for this occasion.
Which Italian jazz players would you reccomend to our readers?
There are so many amazing musicians in Italy! It is so difficult for me to choose among everybody. By the way, I can suggest mostly my teachers and my first inspirators like Dado Moroni, Antonio Faraò, Franco D’Andrea, Furio Di Castri, Pietro Tonolo.
Can you tell us about your background?
Classical music was my first experience, jazz appeared later on. I studied in Turin and in Alessandria, where I attended and graduated at the local Conservatory, meanwhile I discovered jazz by listening to my older classmates. I immediately searched for albums and books about improvisation. Lately, I took some private lessons with Fred Hersh and other great musicians, in NYC and all around the world, where I can find new inspiration (mostly Herbie Hancock).
You have won so many different music awards. What do you think it’s the most important thing in creating original music?
Curiosity and passion, dedication… these are the musts. The music we make is the result of our experience, we have to feed it continuously!
What is your next project?
At the moment, I am working towards several directions. I have my Italian trio and another one with Danish players; in autumn I’ll record a new album in duo with Javier Girotto on saxophone, and I’m also working using electronic music and some experiments. Furthermore, I also work as a sideman in many bands so… let’s see!
