January 14, 2021
Il labirinto dei topi (The Maze of Mice) is the first album of the group led by Francesca Remigi.
Released on January 5th by Emme Record Label, the album features the drummer with her group Archipélagos, composed of Claire Parsons on voice and effects, Federico Calcagno on clarinets, Niran Dasika on trumpet, Simon Groppe on piano and Ramon Van Merkenstein on double bass. Archipélagos was born in Brussels in March 2019 and offers eclectic sounds that mix modern jazz, contemporary classical, prog, electronic and free jazz.
Il Labirinto dei Topi is inspired by the writings of sociologists and historians such as Noam Chomsky, Zygmunt Bauman, Roberto Saviano, Samuel Huntington and William McNeill with the aim of expressing the cornerstones of their thinking in music… the liquidity of social relations, the decay of contemporary society, the crisis of the capitalist economy linked to the idea of the free market, the evolution of organized crime, the growth of the arms market, the intensification of an unbridled and omnipotent individualism.
The album is particularly original and the songs are often very articulated featuring several different sections. There are moments of paroxysmal fury (the articulated title-track, the first part of “Gomorrah, the Fast” and “Tiger Study”) opposed to poetic ones, like the first section of “Scherzo”.
It’s a record full of ideas, original and surprising, supported by a lucid aesthetic, at the same time fierce and intriguing.
