Fugu Quintet
Interweavement
Self Release, 2021
June 3, 2021
Interweavement is the title of the third Fugu Quintet’s album.
Their name is Fugu Quintet and they are a St. Petersburg ensemble that features in the line up lya Kondrashkov on tenor and alto, Konstantin Ivanov on guitar and synth, Aleksandr Kichev on electric bass, Aleksei Shchekochikhin on keyboards and synths and Igor Borodin on drums. The ensemble releases the new album after Sisyphus in 2016 and Circus in 2017.
The proposal is an interesting and personal blend of jazz, indie rock and modal vamps that manage to build particularly successful nocturnal sound environments, and the tonal variety is ensured by the numerous guests: Artemiy Fakhrutdinov on drums, Aleksandra Gagarinova on percussion, Vladimir Bastin on trumpet and flugelhorn, Mikrokosm on synth drone, Konstantin Khazanovich on keyboards, Ivan Rukinov, Olga Vasilevskaya, Irina Molchanova, Sofia Larina, Aleksandra Agapova, Aleksei Makin and Artemiy Iliashevich on strings.
“Firefly” and “No One Had Come” are particularly dark, with a sinuous but at the same time uncertain and worried atmpsphere. “War” (still in a minor key) sounds like an ideal movie soundtrack without images, while “Duck Of War” offers a more playful and fun theme. “Where Flamingos Fly (the only non-original song, written by Elthea Peale, Harold Courlander, John Benson Brooks and title of a famous album by Gil Evans) is a heartbreaking ballad, while the final” Krakatoa “is a delicate composition characterized by the delay of the guitar and the use of the orchestra of strings.
Interweavement is a particularly original and eclectic album that will surely appeal to night lovers.
