COOKING PHOTOGRAPHY
Jazzespresso has interviewed the photographer Garland Hancock, a former chef who successfully moved to the world of pictures.
Who’s Garland Hancock?
I’m a self taught photographer who also happens to be a chef which I think I’m a better photographer than chef. I’m very passionate about both but more so to my photography and at some point I’ll stop cooking and focus solely on photography.

Why did you choose jazz photography? Are you only interested in jazz?
I’ve always had a thing for jazz music and the famous album covers from the Blue Note label. That’s when I knew that I wanted to photograph jazz musicians. When I’m in the pit and my lens is focused on the artist I become one with them. I see it, I feel it, I shoot it.

Would you like to share with us an anecdote about your relationships with jazz musicians?
It was at the Richmond Jazz Festival where Roy Ayers and Mark Adams was performing . Mark see’s me and hopped down off the stage and we shook hands and after a few words he say’s c’mon Roy’s backstage we go to the back along with another photographer and Roy see’s me and looks at the other photographer and say’s while pointing at me You do know you with a bad man? Bad meaning good, we all bust out laughing and Roy says it’s good seeing you again Garland.

What could you suggest to young photographers approaching this art?
Yes, Invest in a great piece of equipment, Respect the artist space and time when allowed as well as the crowd. You don’t want to be in the way of a guest while trying to get a shot of a musician. Most of all stay focused. (Pun Intended)

Which is your favourite gear?
As of lately I’ve been shooting with two Nikon professional style bodies with a Tamron 70-200 mm F/2.8 lens along with and recently got a Fuji XT2 with a 18-55 lens.

Is there a pic you’d wish you’ve taken?
That’s a great question, As it’s so many to choose from but if I had to pick one it would be between the image of Duke Ellington in his dressing room or The John Coltrane Blue Train cover which are both iconic . I gotta pick Duke Ellington. Leonardo thank you for the interview I look forward to being apart of the jazzespresso family.
