Announced that the Institute will change its name
The Board of Directors of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz has announced that from January 1, 2019 the Institute will change its name and will become the “Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz”.
The decision has been taken because of Herbie Hancock’s disinterested dedication and service to the institute over the last three decades, for his expert lead as the President in the last 15 years and for his immense contribution to education and teaching. The proposal aims at guaranteeing continuity, stability and vision for the future of the institute.
The American pianist, composer and winner of prestigious international prizes has commented his recent appointment as follows: “We will continue to teach jazz history and importance, its traditions and the improvisation, by exploring new directions and horizons for the future.
