It’s titled “Lontano” (Italian for “far”) and it’s the first solo album by Nick Garbett, an Australian trumpeter well known as the soloist of the Vampires. On this record he is accompanied by Peter Farrar on sax, Daniel Pliner on piano, Jonatha Zwartz on double bass and James Waples on drums. We interviewed him.

Why did you choose this title (“Lontano”) and why did you live so many months in Lampedusa?
The title definitely comes from the time I’ve spent there, to me personally it was a long way from everything, a long way from Australia. The reason I was there is because my wife was working for the UN, so I had a “front seat” to see what was happening. Immigrants, as well, were a long way from home.

Living there was difficult, it is obviously a beautiful Mediterranean island, but it was really difficult to see what was happening. For my wife it was a hard job, she saw a lot of very ugly things happen.

One of the main differences of this record with the Vampires’ is that there is a harmonic instrument (the piano). Why did you decide to have Daniel Pliner in the group?
Yes, I was writing using electronic music effects on the trumpet and using different voicings to detail the harmonic directions.

Did you write the music in a different way for this record? How do you write music?
Yes, I was writing using electronic music effects on the trumpet and using different voicings to detail the harmonic directions.

How do you write music?
Usually with a piano and also with the trumpet (I write with the piano and then I play what I wrote with a trumpet). Often my wife was at work at night so it was generally during the nighttime.

How did you choose the musicians?
They are all old friends, actually. Jonathan is a legendary player in Australia, I just love to play with him. I went to university with James, the drummer and Danny the piano player is a very close friend. So it’s a close band.

Does being from Australia affects your music in your opinion?
It’s a difficult question! I think European and American sound are different, and Australian musicians take a little bit from both approaches. I think it’s in the people’s personality and attitude towards music.

What are the next plans for the Vampires?
We are planning to record again in November and tour Australia. And we are putting together a European tour in march 2021.
