Steeplechase announces the release of Euphoria, John Hart’s latest album.
An American teacher and session man of great value and fame, John Hart has recently released his latest album Euphoria for Steeplechase. The guitar player leads a brilliant group that features Jim Ridl on piano, Martin Wind on double bass and Tim Horner on drums.
The record collects four compositions by Hart (“Euphoria”, “Unintended Consequences”, “Area 51” and “Bird Watch”) and a long series of well-known jazz standards: “Panonica” by Monk, “Lover Man” by Ramirez, “With A Song In My Heart” by Rodgers, etc.
The album explores post-bop and contemporary sounds, with brilliant and incisive performances (“Euphoria”, “With A Song In My Heart”), beautiful guitar and piano dialogues (“Pannonica”), a crackling “jazz waltz” (“Unintended Consequences”) and the inevitable ballads (“I Didn’t Know What Time It Was”, “Lover Ma”).
“Area 51” is a modal track with a beautiful melody, while “Body And Soul” is here revisited with taste and elegance. The song that intrigued me the most, however, is “Bird Watch”, a bop theme that takes us back to those worlds dear to Wes Montgomery.
Euphoria is a great album recorded by an interesting guitarist, brilliantly mixing tradition and contemporary sound.
