Disrespectful

Saxophonist Zhenya Strigalev and drummer Jamie Murray are JZ Replacement, a project that draws on a large number of different genres and styles to create a vital and energetic music, a real sonic slap.

> Ivano Rossato

Disrespectful: a mission statement?
Originally it came out because Jamie was saying this word when he wanted to say that the music (or anything else) is real and pure. It’s slang. It is a mission statement. Depends how you interpret it.  Yes, we disrespect all the fashions in music, numerous attempts by millions of people (we won’t call them artists) to make “fake music” the only goal of which to make money.

We disrespect mass production art (for the reason above), we disrespect poor qualified art/music makers (its not about vibes and politics- you need to be virtuoso on your instrument or tools) who understand it but try to mislead everybody (very often with big success) in order to make profits, we disrespect people’s love for brands and corporate products as well as those brands who are programming people to love them (as the result everything is mainstream now with no face).

We can list lots of other things that we disrespect, but lets us get rid of these things in ourselves first.

How was the JZ Replacement project born?
It was born out of a project called beat replacement which is like an electronic fusion project by Jamie. Zhenya brought a duo idea which we put into the set and performed at the love supreme festival in England. People seemed to enjoy the duo and the entertainment so we thought it would be good to continue that concept.

Which compositional approach did you follow? How much written and improvised do the recorded songs contain?
Usually it goes like this. Zhenya bring some drafts of tunes to the rehearsal. Then we rehearse it, figure out some drum part, make some changes and agree on arrangements. Sometime we end up having one part of one tune mixed with some part of the other tune. It could take up to half a year to finalise a tune. Sometime, its because we just cant technically play what we put together. There are lots of improvisations. Usually there are maximum of 20 percents of written material compare to improvised.

The music contained in “Disrespectful” seems not to have a defined label; what are your main musical and artistic references?
The influences vary from several different sources with improvisation being the foundation on which they grow. Indian music and rhythms to electronica and drum and bass, to tight rhythmical grooves and of course jazz. The sources are mixed into what you hear.

What are the next steps for the JZ Replacement project?
There are lots exciting plans, but we tend not to talk about plans till the done or nearly done. More you speak about plans, less chances they will actually happen. BUT, we definitely plan to do a new studio record. There are also thought to release a live recording. There are lots of new material. We are planning to expand our musical pallet and technical limits. Also we are planning to do some new collaborations with some exciting International artists.
