Giovanni Mazzarino
Love Vibrations
Jazzy, 2020

December 9, 2020

The new album by Giovanni Mazzarino is titled Love Vibrations.

Released by Jazzy on 7 December (five years after the previous album Songs), the record features the pianist accompanied by a quartet of authentic Italian jazz stars: Fabrizio Bosso on trumpet, Rosario Bonaccorso on double bass and Nicola Angelucci on drums.

Having (temporarily) abandoned the role of the composer, Mazzarino has chosen a tracklist that revisits some of the great classics of the jazz songbook in a melancholy and rarefied key, with songs by Horace SIlver Duke Ellington, Chico Buarque de Hollanda, Irving Berlin and others.

The album is a poetic journey through the history of jazz with minimal arrangements, moderate tempos, the exaltation of a sober aesthetic in which every note counts and describes a world made of whispers.

The final “Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans”, a wonderful dialogue of trumpet and piano, is emblematic of the whole record. It must be said that all the songs are fascinating, but if we had to choose one we would choose the  (particularly) intriguing version of “Oh Que Serà”, with a solo of great taste and synthesis of the leader.

A record that well expresses the poetic touch of Mazzarino, which at the same time pays a wonderful tribute to a series of songs that have been  the most played over the last hundred years.
