“NOI” is the title of the new album by guitarist, author and teacher Marco Martínez, who on this occasion leads a trio with Horacio García on double bass and Pier Bruera on drums.

How are NOI compositions born?
Initially NOI was written for “Everything is There”, a play directed by Sergio Gayol. The music is born from the stage presence and during the compositional process, somewhat particular and perhaps reflexive because we were in the middle of a pandemic. The music took shape and grew freely. The idea inevitably came to me to take this music live and to fulfill the dynamics and expectations of a concert.

In NOI’s songs you perceive “space”, and even in the liveliest moments there is no saturation… A deliberate choice or a natural result?
Space and silence are very valuable elements that invite listening and interaction, this interested me a lot on a collective level. Knowing how to listen is very important. Most of the music stems from a situation or moment in the play and my goal was for the music to subtly complement this staging, enhance it and even take it to another place. Forcing this situation of space and breadth triggers the imagination in both the musician and the listener, it is a way of asking questions rather than giving answers. Miles Davis said something like “silence is the loudest noise” [laughs]

Can you tell us about the other musicians in the trio and the guest musicians?
I have had the fortune of recording with friends who are also fantastic musicians. The core group is made up of Horacio García on double bass and Pier Bruera on drums, and for some songs we complete the quartet with Eladio Díaz, a saxophonist with whom I have collaborated on countless projects and I share a taste for this aesthetic proposal. The work required some piano pieces and it was Cesar Latorre who provided very beautiful music.
The recording was handled by Fernando Arias, who in addition to being a brilliant sound engineer is an excellent musician and percussionist, so he also plays on a number of songs. I am currently presenting the music live together with two very talented and tremendously creative musicians, with whom I am very in tune at the moment, the double bassist Ander García and the drummer Hilario Rodeiro.

The use of voice and electronic effects is very “delicate”, almost in the background… is it a sound that you had in your head from the beginning?
I was attracted to the idea of adding elements outside of what would be a classic jazz guitar trio, hence the use of some pedals, samples and my own voice humming some melodies. Beyond the desire to play with new effects the idea arose from the beginning with the aim of decontextualizing this music and achieving certain textures, in some cases less organic and more modern, although I don’t know if that would be the word. In any case, I would like to continue exploring in this direction.

What are the next steps for the future?
Mainly playing and showing these compositions, because we have hardly had a chance and the trio is sounding really good. Secondly, I would like to work more with Hilario and Ander and develop this concept, in which collective improvisation is above individual improvisation. And yes it is possible to go to the studio again and make a new recording.
