Sounding Point is Mark Feldman’s latest solo album.
Among the best-known contemporary violin virtuosos, Mark Feldman (born in Chicago in 1955) boasts a career full of collaborations: John Zorn, John Abercrombie, Dave Douglas, Uri Caine, Michale Brecker, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano and Chris Potter, to name a few.
26 years after Music For Violin Alone (Tzadik, 1995) Feldman returns to an album only for violin. The repertoire features six originals by the American musician, “As We Are” by Sylvie Courvoisier and “Peace Warriors” by Ornette Coleman (one of three songs in which Feldman brilliantly uses overdubs).
The album highlights (once again) Feldman’s eclecticism. He brilliantly blends different styles and influences to create a particularly meaningful record.
The initial “As We Are” is emblematic, constantly alternating melodic and recognizable phrases with “answers” with an evident avant-garde matrix. “Sounding Point” is mainly built with fast and aggressive songs, as heard in “Peace Warriors” (a very successful homage to Coleman “), in the classical sounding “Viciously” and “Maniac”, and in the percussive “Rebound “, a travel in the free tradition.
However, it is perhaps in the title track that shows the mastery of the American violinist, who here expresses a melancholy, evocative music, full of pathos and at times excruciating.
