Pat Metheny
Road To The Sun
Modern Recordings, 2021
April 23, 2021
Pat Metheny‘s latest album is titled Road to the Sun and is dedicated to classical guitar.
Perhaps the most famous guitarist expressed by the jazz scene in the second half of the twentieth century, Pat Metheny constantly surprises his audience with wit and changes in style, formation and inspiration.
His latest album, released by Modern Recordings, is titled Road to the Sun and once again constitutes a novelty in his catalog: the record, in fact, contains two (long and articulated) compositions played respectively by the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (LAGQ) and by Jason Vieaux, five of the most talented contemporary classical guitarists. Metheny only plays in the cover of “Für Alina” by Arvo Pärt and accompanies a couple of songs from the suite that gives the album its title.
The record admirably summarizes, in a very particular and characteristic sonic world (that of the classical guitar with nylon strings) the stylistic elements for which Metheny is known as a composer and as an improviser: a brilliant mix of airy melodies, dissonances, complex shapes but also simple melodies, harmonic research and references to popular songs. Particularly successful are the fourth movement of “Road to the Sun”, based on a riff played on the low notes and the sad melody of “Four Paths of Light Part 2”. The remarkable and particularly gloomy arrangement of “Für Alina” is also memorable.
Road to the Sun is a very original album that eliminates the distances between genres and presents a “total” musical package that transcends all definitions.
