Colores (Caligola) is the title of the new album by the Spanish singer-songwriter Pedro Makay.

Pedro Makay, born in 1981, is an interesting Spanish singer-songwriter with a curriculum full of experiences: he studied Caribbean rhythms in Jamaica, flamenco with Luis Cortez, recorded his second album as a leader in Buenos Aires that earned him a Latin Grammy Award nomination, and then returned to Madrid where he established his headquarters.

His new album is titled Colores and is an original and brilliant mix of the elements of his formation: Afro-Cuban rhythms, jazz arrangements, funk, blues and rock moments; all developed in songs with an evident song form used intelligently as an open container to develop ideas and suggestions.

“La Mosca” immediately throws us in Cuba with the trumpet of Miron Rafajilovic as the protagonist and the voice of the leader. It is followed by “Volveré Contigo Cuando Me Quieras”, marked by the irresistible drum groove of Pancho Brañas and the voices of by Oumou Bah, Nuria Nchama and Abba Suso. “Vahine No Te Tiare” features a nice arpeggiated guitar part, while “Caravana” is a nice mix of blues and Latin, with an irresistible groove and a distorted guitar punctuating the vocal line.

“Rueda la Rueda” brings us back to Caribbean landscapes with a good rhythm section, while the final “Colores” is a mix of all the different influences with a nice choral arrangement.
Colores is a beautiful album of songs, arranged with taste and talent, which – as the liner notes well suggest – is “an injection of sunny joy in times like these that are particularly gray and sad”.
