The tribute to Bill Evans of the Pinheiro, Ineke and Cavalli Trio
Along with Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans is probably the most influential pianist in the history of the piano in modern jazz. He has solidified a conception of the trio that has revolutionized the canons and imposed a model that is still taken as an example today. Challenge records announces the release of Turn Out The Stars: The Music Of Bill Evans, an album dedicated to the great maestro recorded by Ricardo Pinheiro on guitar, Massimo Cavalli on double bass and Erik Ineke on drums.
The three musicians, of different nationalities (Ineke is Dutch, Cavalli is Italian and Pinheiro Portuguese) approach the Evansian repertoire after having released the album Is Seeing Believing? (Daybreak, 2016) in quintet with David Liebman on saxophone and Mário Laginha on piano.
The new records collects seven songs, some Evans’ classics (“Interplay”, “Very Early”) and some standards that the pianist loved to play (“You Must Believe In Spring”, “Some Other Time”). The album features particularly original sounds (extraordinary and fascinating those of “Time Remembered”), and the trio, while inspired by an artist with a particularly recognizable sound, is in turn decidedly original and personal.
“Turn Out The Stars” is a beautiful and intense record, which works on several levels. A delicate homage to Bill Evans, at the same time it outlines an interesting way of conceiving the guitar trio and highlights (once again) the extraordinary talent of the three protagonists.
