Rebirth is the last album recorded by the great percussionist Ray Mantilla before his passing last March.
Among the greatest percussionists in jazz history, Ray Mantilla was born on June 22, 1934 and passed away last March. During his career he has played – and recorded – with many jazz greats, from Dizzy Gillespie to Max Roach, from Gato Barbieri to Ray Barretto, from Art Blakey to Kenny Burrell, to name a few.
The last album recorded by Mantilla before succumbing to a lymphoma last March is titled Rebirth. The album was recorded with the same group that was already the protagonist of High Voltage (2017) formed by Ivan Renta on soprano and tenor, Jorge Castro on flute and baritone, Guido Gonzalez on trumpet and flugelhorn, Edy Martinez on piano and Rhodes , Mike Freeman on vibraphone and Diego Lopez on drums; new entry in the group is Reuben Rodriguez on bass.
The album is a brilliant work in the Latin jazz style with fun arrangements (“Hit The Road Jack”), a particularly effective and well-organized wind trio (“Dat Dere”, “Yuyo”) an enchanting ballad (“Preciosa”) and an excursion in the jazz-rock sound (“Martinez”). It’s a record that will appeal to those who were already fans of Mantilla and is at the same time a useful concentrate of his style for those who have never listened to his music.
So long, Ray!

I spent three days with Ray Mantilla in Washington DC as he performed for the last time as an original member of M’Boom, an all percussionist ensemble started by Max Roach in the 70s. The night after the concert, over dinner, Ray told some great stories about being in the music business.
