Last year I lost the opportunity of attending Roy Hargrove Quintet show at Tokyo’s Blue Note. I waited for an year and eventually the group came back. A total of six shows in three days were sold out very quickly. When at the last moment Jazzespresso informed me that they would have liked me to write a report, I literally became crazy for joy.
Roy Hargrove started the set without telling a word, a 90-minute duration musical gig without breaks; the whole audience was in ecstasy and anxious to be able to see the show, standing up from their seats and dancing. Roy Hargrove himself, at some point, started to dance on stage.
Roy Hargrove, Justin Robinson, Tadataka Unno （海野雅威) and Ameen Salee: they each have a very different style, their interpretations are beyond any doubt experienced and outstanding. The Japanese audience, of course, was anxiously waiting for Tadataka Unno’s（海野雅威）performance. He is considered as one of the best young jazz musician in Japan, although now he spends most of his time abroad. His craft on music, his creativity gives audience so many surprise. He even improvised with the famous melody of “Pink Panther” during his solo. It was so playful and amusing.
While playing Never Let Me Go Hargrove started to sing, and moved everybody. During the show he alternated Swing, Latin, Funk, Fusion, and his style was particularly appreciated. The night of the concert, there was a participation of the Jazz Spot-Intro founder, Tokyo’s *的创办人茂串邦明先生来看演出, Mr. Mao Shiming, and there were also local young jazz musicians. There’s no wonder that Roy Hargrove Quintet is highly recommended by all generations in the programme book of the Blue Note Tokyo, including the creative director of the fashion brand Beams Creation Laboratory Mr. 青野贤一 (Kenichi Aono) and the youngest internet celebrity in Japan Mappy. Mappy, who is only 18 years old, declared that Roy Hargrove’s music is a unique music which goes beyond the genre, and that she has always been influenced by it.
If the music was a visual art, we could compare Roy Hargrove to Andy Warhol: he brought to life a new generation of jazz. If you have lost this concert, in 2018 you will have to go to Europe to listen to his music.
* founded in 1975, Jazz Spot-Intro is a jazz bar which in the 1980’s and 90’s was visited by many international artists after their performances at Blue Note.
