Reflections and Odysseys
Rymden is the trio born from the union of some of the most influential modern jazz artists. We interviewed drummer and composer Magnus Öström during the world tour supporting their new album.
> Ivano Rossato
How would you describe the Rymden project?
It's obviously a piano trio, with shared songwriting which I like a lot. It creates a collective feeling. It's also an open platform for taking trips in different directions. Everyone is very open minded, which also is super important for me. I find the trio format one of the best for taking fast turns and having enough space and time to actually do something.

Starting with the scores up to the recording, how was the creative process behind "Reflections and Odysseys"?
This first time everyone brought songs, sending some mp3s back and forth and then we met a couple of days and rehearsed it, then into the studio. It was a very easy recording session though I remember Bugge having a bad cold on the first occasion, though he played great anyway.
As in your other works, also in this album we can perceive different influences and genres; was it for you three a premeditated or completely unconscious and free creative process?
We have never discussed it that much. I think all of us are open minded and we also grew up with all this great rock and pop music and of course jazz and classical music, so it's a mixture of all our inputs which hopefully creates a vibe of our own.
Do you think that your and Dan Berglund's way of approaching the concept of trio has changed with Bugge Wesseltoft compared to the experience with EST?
No, not really, we play like we do, with our sound and energy. Though anyone you play with will have an impact on your way of playing 'cause you listen and react to what's around you.
After numerous successful live events, what do you have in mind for Rymden's future?
We're gonna continue touring the album, playing a bunch of Summer festivals and we have quite a lot of gigs in the Autumn too. It feels good to play together, so hopefully we will record another album next year, but will see what the future brings.
