The documentary Sicily Jass – The World’s First Man in Jazz, directed by the young Italian director Michele Cinque, has been defined a round trip between Sicily and America. Recently presented at the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute in New York, the movie tells about Nick La Rocca’s story, the trumpeter with Sicilian origins but born in New Orleans at the end of the 19th century, who recorded the first record in the history of jazz, Livery Stable Blues, recorded in 1917 together with his Original Dixieland Jazz Band.
Cinque’s work is to be considered a due tribute to an artist who is often forgotten by the official historiography, in the jazz centennial year. After participating to Taormina Film Festival and having received a special mention at Salina Doc Festival, the movie will be also presented in Algiers, Berlin, Amsterdam, London, Osaka and Melbourne.
