Sonia Schiavone
Wayne Shorter’s Legacy
Da Vinci, 2022
Da Vinci announces the release of Wayne Shorter’s Legacy, the latest album by Sonia Schiavone.
Sonia Schiavone is a brilliant Italian singer that I have known for many years. She has always been passionate about the so-called “Great American Songbook, the American songs written between the 20s and 40s by famous authors such as George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart and so on.
I was therefore surprised listening to Sonia’s new record, a tribute to Wayne Shorter. Shorter is an extraordinary artist, one of the best composers in the history of jazz, the musical director of the most famous quintet of Miles Davis, the leader of the Weather Report (together with Joe Zawinul), and many other things.
In fact, the album presents compositions that are considered true classics of modern jazz (“Speak No Evil”, “Footprints”), sung impeccably by Schiavone, who is perfectly at ease even in the most contemporary sound worlds.
The arrangements are original and well played by a group that feautres Aldo Caramellino on trombone, Cesare Mecca on trumpet, Donato Stolfi on drums, Fabio Gorlier on piano, Stefano Profeta on double bass and Gianni Virone on saxophones and clarinets. The arrangements were written with taste and skill (often the impression is that of listening to a big band, as you hear in “Yes And No” or “Black Nile”), but there are also more rarefied and evocative moments (“Touches Of Colors ”, “ Miyako ”).
Wayne Shorter’s Legacy is a particularly well played and designed record, which impeccably pays homage to Shorter by telling new aspects of Sonia Schiavone.
