The Connection is the title of the new album by Aldo Bagnoni published by AlfaMusic.
The latest project by the Apulian drummer, “The Connection” features a quartet completed by Emanuele Coluccia on tenor and soprano (and piano in “Clarabella”), Mauro Tre on piano, Rhodes and synthesizer and Giampaolo Laurentaci on double bass.
The album developes the musical horizons of contemporary jazz: emblematic in this sense “Cappello Eolico”, an intense track, with drums and Rhodes in the foreground supporting the whole quartet. The songs are all originals composed by Bagnoni (with the exception of “Lipompo’s Just Arrived”, a traditional Lucanian melody here revisited in a funk fashion), and are characterized by beautiful melodies and always interesting developments, as heard in “This Is My Place”. After a soft and ethereal start the song start grows joyfully up to the liberating piano solo. There is no lack of more moderate moments, such as the delightful ballad “Heart On A Mountain”.
The Connection is a well written (and very well played) record which, moving within the guidelines of contemporary jazz, is at the same time very personal and original. A multi-faceted album that requires multiple plays to be fully grasped.
