Thomas Linger
Out In It
Cellar Live, 2022

Cellar Live announces the release of Out In It, Thomas Linger’s debut album.

A brilliant pianist from North Carolina, Thomas Linger recently released his debut album Out In It through Cellar Live Records. Linger leads a line up featuring some of the best known musicians on the contemporary American scene: Peter Bernstein on guitar, Yasushi Nakamura on double bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums.

The record collects nine original songs (in addition to the cover of “Lush Life”), and is inspired by the hard-bop sound of the 50s and 60s, full of swing and groove. The leader and Bernstein are particularly close-knit (sometimes reminding me of the quartets of Wynton Kelly with Wes Montgomery) and the rhythm section of Nakamura and Farnsworth supports without the need to play too loud.

“Can’t Say It” and “Night Ride” are two fast and articulate songs that exalt the remarkable skills of the quartet (listen to Bernstein’s solo). “Mercurial Behemoth” alternates afro and swing rhythms, with a virtuosic solo by the leader. Perhaps the most interesting moments of the whole work are the two ballads: “Linger’s Lament” with a particularly lyrical Berstein, and “Lush Life”, for piano solo.

I can’t not mention the title track, fun and full of breaks (in the purest hard-bop style) and the final “Wookin’ And Tweetin'”, a smoky medium blues.

Overall Out In It is an album with both feet in tradition, with excellent musicians and well-written and arranged compositions. Nothing new under the sun, but a nice record that will appeal to hard-bop and mainstream lovers.
