New Door is the title of the first album by TUN – Torino Unlimited Noise.

The Italian trio featuring Gianni De Nitto on alto, Fabio Giachino on keyboards and synths, and Mattia Barbieri on drums released their debut EP Jason in 2019. Followed by their first album New Door, both are released by Jazz – O – Tech, a Berlin label that is very active in presenting interesting crossover projects that mix techno, electronic, dance and jazz.

TUN themselves describe the project as follows: “This record is the result of two years of sound research between jazz and electronics. We had the goal of finding a unique and unprecedented synthesis, which did not follow a trend or one fashion. We built the sound of the album taking a cue from the jazz of the 1920s, the one that was played in dance halls, where the bass drum supported the improvisations and set the dance floor unleashed. At the time it was an acoustic drum, today it is electronic; but the spirit is the same: a constant and hypnotic rhythm on which improvisations are born and dances explode. We know that the tour that will promote the record will not allow us, for now, to play for a dancing audience. But we are satisfied and we can already imagine the swaying of bodies and feet beating time. We recorded the entire album during the first lockdown, but almost all the songs had been tested live in crowded dancefloors. There is another common thread in this work, and it is the city of Turin. In all the songs you can breathe its sound, an underground and industrial mix that mixes different cultures and is pervaded, in fact, by that particular Unlimited Noise, that incessant noise that seems the breath of the city, between the rattling of the trams, the murmur of the river, the roar of traffic and factories”.

The album is an extraordinary synthesis between the jazz roots of De Nitto, Giachino and Barbieri (all the three musicians boast particularly significant solo careers and collaborations with the likes of artists such as Fabrizio Bosso, Samuel Romano, Roy Paci, Adrian Sherwood, Randy Brecker, Gianluca Petrella, Elio, Zion Train, Richard Galliano, Dave Liebman, Tensal …) and sounds and concepts typical of contemporary dance music. Jazz and dance are mixed in an inextricable whole, made up of the brilliant riffs that you’ll find in “Sahara”, the beautiful sounds of “Peacefulness” and “Unlimited Noise”), the aggressive “Tunz”, and the more ethereal and lyrical moments of the the suggestive “Balon”.

New Door, a great title, in fact opens new doors for the jazz of the future with an extraordinary mix of different elements where one foot is planted in tradition (improvisation, interplay, attention to sounds) and the other in the future.
