An espresso with…
Vincent Tsai

March 4, 2018
We have interviewed Vincent Tsai (蔡偉靖), Taiwanese accordion player and composer, founder of the Taiwan Gypsy Festival.

Why did you decide to organize a gypsy festival?

Seven years ago I took part in the Django Reinhardt Festival in Samois-Sur-Seine, in France, and I wondered if it would have ever been possible to invite to Taiwan a group of persons coming from all over the world to play together in order to enjoy the results of the integration of the swing and the popular music. Luckily, with Denis Chang’s help, the festival began in 2015.
How did you select the artists?
Denis Chang is Canadian and Taiwanese, and is an internationally very famous guitar player and educator; Tcha Limberger and Antoine Boyer had been playing with Denis for a long time. Kumiko Imakyurei already participated in 2017 Taipei Gypsy Festival. Denis is a very sought-after educator and is often invited to teach in Gypsy Jazz Camps in Canada, United States, Europe, Japan, United Kingdom and Taiwan. He founded the DC Music School, an online music school that boasts as teachers of several musical styles musicians coming from all over the world, among which Pat Martino, Biréli Lagrène, Ulf Wakenius, Angelo Debarre, Stochelo Rosenberg and many more international guitar players. As of today, this website has more than 15,000 registered users coming from more than 60 Countries all over the world.
Which are the festival locations?
Songyan Eslite Hall, Sappho Live Jazz and Wei-Sun International Culture & Arts.
Which are your targets?
I hope that other friends from Asia will participate in this festival; this year, we are already happy that there are a lot of Countries that have joined in, and we hope this can be a beautiful experience for all the participants. In the next years I really hope that everybody can participate with concerts and groups, I hope to have more live concerts and I hope to spread out the festival to more musical genres, such as for example the swing dance.
