The new album of the quartet formed by Michael Wollny, Emile Parisien, Tim Lefebvre and Christian Lillinger is titled XXXX and was released by ACT.
The record was born from a series of eight sets made in four days in 2019 at the “A-Trane” club in Berlin. Michael Wollny on keyboards, Emile Parisien on sax, Tim Lefebvre on electric bass and Christian Lillinger on drums decided on that occasion to play completely improvised music, without preparation, arrangements, rehearsals or set lists.
XXXX collects a selection of music played live in Berlin. The sounds are the interweaving of electronic keyboards, often with a retro sound, by Wollny mixed with the bass grooves, generally effected, of Lefebvre; on these layers, supported by the decisive but open drumming of Lillinger, the contralto of Parisien is free to improvise.
The songs are an original mixture of improvisation, avant-garde and electronic. They generally have a dark atmosphere, such as in “Tha Haul” and “Grandmother’s Hammer” and are sometimes mysterious, such as “Find the Fish”, convulsive and paroxysmal as in “Doppler Fx” or with an early videogame music like sounds found in “Nostalgia For The Light”.
XXXX is an album that is difficult to classify. It’s a recording by four strong and different personalities who exploit all the available technology to create new and fascinating soundscapes.
